I created this rub over a decade ago when I needed something to coat my chicken wings before going on the grill. Over the years I have used it on everything from Pork Belly Burnt Ends, to adding a dash in my Sweet Heat Baked Beans, or rubbing it on ribs or a pork butt. I’d call this more of a Kansas City style rub than anything else as it has that classic brown sugar sweet heat mixture to it. I religiously use it on my wings and then toss it in my sweet heat bbq sauce, which is a perfect complement and has won me awards on my chicken.
This rub does have cayenne in it so if heat is not your thing then adjust it to your taste buds or leave it out entirely. There’s plenty of flavor in this rub recipe so when you’re in a pinch or have run out of other specialty brand rubs, then this is a fine choice that you can make at home. You’ll also notice that it’s the same rub I used to rim the glass on my Bloody Mary Recipe, which uses out Rebel Red BBQ Sauce. I hope you enjoy it and get good use out of it, too.
